Psalm 104:33-35

Notice how the psalmist desires that even his thoughts be pleasing to the Lord. Does God know our thoughts? Yes He does!
Consider the following examples…
King David, after his major indiscretion with Bathsheba, was confronted by Nathan the prophet. David’s repentance before the Lord led to the writing of Psalm 51. In verse 6, David writes:
“Behold, You desire truth in the inner being…”
In Psalm 139:1-4, David states:
”O Lord, you have examined my heart and know everything about me. You know when I sit down or stand up. You know my thoughts even when I’m far away. You see me when I travel and when I rest at home. You know everything I do. You know what I am going to say even before I say it, Lord.”
And then in Psalm 139:23-24:
“Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life.”
Jesus said in Matthew 5:28 that anyone who even looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
And in Matthew 15:11, Jesus makes clear that:
“It’s not what goes into your mouth that defiles you; you are defiled by the words that come out of your mouth.””

And then in Matthew 15:18-20:
“But the words you speak come from the heart—that’s what defiles you. For from the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, all sexual immorality, theft, lying, and slander. These are what defile you. Eating with unwashed hands will never defile you.””

Consider what the Apostle Paul stated in Roman 2:28-29:
“For you are not a true Jew just because you were born of Jewish parents or because you have gone through the ceremony of circumcision. No, a true Jew is one whose heart is right with God. And true circumcision is not merely obeying the letter of the law; rather, it is a change of heart produced by the Spirit. And a person with a changed heart seeks praise from God, not from people.”
Romans 2:28-29 NLT

God is after our heart. He knows us inside and out, and even though we may carry ourselves well on the outside, we don’t want to be like the Pharisees whom Jesus called whitewashed tombs:
““What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs—beautiful on the outside but filled on the inside with dead people’s bones and all sorts of impurity. Outwardly you look like righteous people, but inwardly your hearts are filled with hypocrisy and lawlessness.”
Matthew 23:27-28 NLT

As my husband always says, “Don’t pretend to be someone you don’t intend to be” because God knows it all, even the thoughts we think.
In the words of David in Psalm 51:10, may our prayer be:
“Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a loyal spirit within me.”
Amen!
