Psalm 119:57-64

Do we ever stop to ponder the direction of our lives? It is always good to take inventory once in a while. Sometimes we discover something is missing. Sometimes we are settling for less than what we are called to do. Maybe we are settling for less than we are called to be.

The psalmist is keenly aware of the forces of evil that try and drag him into sin. Keeping the Word of God close to his heart is his defense. In fact, he is anchored in God’s instructions.

I love the symbolism of an anchor. Boats rely on them to hold steady in a particular location, preventing them from drifting away due to environmental forces like wind or currents. Likewise, we encounter all kinds of forces in life that seek to pull us off course. Without being anchored to the Word of God, the storms of life will surely drag us onto the rocks.

However, for the Word of God to be our anchor, we must first know it. Notice that the psalmist declares himself a friend to those who fear and obey God’s instructions. We must also choose our friends carefully, lest they become a stumbling block.

God is the only true anchor for our soul, and deference should always be given to Him.
