Psalm 104:25-32

“The earth trembles at His glance and mountains smoke at His touch.”

Interestingly, last night, there was a massive quake in Russia that sent Tsunami warnings all across the Pacific. Reports were coming in fast and furious about the threat it posed to Hawaii and the West Coast. Hawaii was on high alert and though it created some massive bottlenecks in traffic as people were headed to higher ground, it was encouraging to see so many heed the warning. Thankfully, the threat has been downgraded as of this morning, though some areas were affected.

We must never underestimate the power of water to displace even the most sturdy of structures. As a resident of Florida, we are familiar with a thing called ‘storm surge’ that accompanies hurricanes that come ashore. They cause massive damage along the coastline causing many to have to start over,  provided they make it through ?And yet, God has a way of making sure the waters and waves retreat to their preassigned limits.

The advance warning system is a life saver. For some, the only warning they get is the receding of the waters because they are not aware and ‘blissfully’ distracted with other affairs of life. And even then, curiosity often gets the best of them. While receding waters is an anomaly amazing to behold, that is our sign to get to higher ground. It means something big is coming! Water has been displaced and it must return to its preassigned borders, but not without some settling back and forth.

It seems like there is a massive checks and balances in operation in creation. When things get out of whack, creation rights itself back to God’s design. As much as we try and play God, we are reminded of His ultimate power through displays of nature that are kept in check by Him. Everything serves His purposes.

The flood in Noah’s day, served His purposes and cleansed the whole earth of that which defiled it as only Noah and his family were considered righteous and God spared him. Noah knew the flood was coming because He had a relationship with God and God told Him. He acted upon that knowledge and built the Ark under God’s direction and was able to save himself and a seed of all created things in order to start over again once the water settled. Warnings are powerful and life saving if we not only hear them, but also heed and act upon them.

The people of Noah’s day witnessed Noah building the ark for over 100 years. They observed God’s warning to mankind yet chose to ignore the warning. They could have prepared boats themselves but they chose not to heed the warning. By the time they realized what was happening, it was too late.

The Bible warns us of judgment for those who have not heeded His warnings. History has been under a tsunami threat of judgment since the Fall. God sent Jesus as our life line, our floatation device, to weather the storm when it hits but our job is to be prepared for when that time comes. We do not know the day or the hour but we have been warned. As Jesus stated in Matthew 25:13:

““So you, too, must keep watch! For you do not know the day or hour of my return.”

Are we heeding His warning? Be and stay prepared!
