Psalm 135:15-18

It is arrogance on our part to think we can accurately describe, encapsulate, or reduce God to an image or design. The Bible says He dwells in unapproachable light. His presence is felt but not seen in conventional ways—unless you are looking at a burning bush, or witnessing a terrifying storm on the Mountain of the Lord. Yet idols are man’s attempt to give credit to something they interpret as God.
Many make the mistake thinking they are God, just as Satan did before he was cast out of heaven.
Whatever the form, the Lord had strong words for such people in Isaiah 44:
“Who but a fool would make his own god— an idol that cannot help him one bit?…The person who made the idol never stops to reflect, “Why, it’s just a block of wood! I burned half of it for heat and used it to bake my bread and roast my meat. How can the rest of it be a god? Should I bow down to worship a piece of wood?” The poor, deluded fool feeds on ashes. He trusts something that can’t help him at all. Yet he cannot bring himself to ask, “Is this idol that I’m holding in my hand a lie?””

How many things do we hold in our hands that are lies? They may not be a graven images, but whatever we devote our time and energy to can become an idol—especially if it takes the place of God in our lives. There is only One Creator, and there is only One who deserves the credit for creation. As God said in Isaiah 45:
““What sorrow awaits those who argue with their Creator. Does a clay pot argue with its maker? Does the clay dispute with the one who shapes it, saying, ‘Stop, you’re doing it wrong!’ Does the pot exclaim, ‘How clumsy can you be?’”
Isaiah 45:9 NLT

Paul echoes this in Romans 9:
“No, don’t say that. Who are you, a mere human being, to argue with God? Should the thing that was created say to the one who created it, “Why have you made me like this?””
Romans 9:20 NLT

We were never our own. We are the created and are called to serve the Creator. In the wrong spirit, this thought offends many. In the right spirit, we understand that we serve a benevolent God who seeks our good. Believe it or not, before we accepted the Lord, we were Satan’s possession by right of what happened in the Garden of Eden. In Christ, we have now become Jesus’ possession who purchased us by His blood according to Acts 20:28.
Consider 1 Corinthians 6:19-20:
“Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.”
1 Corinthians 6:19-20 NLT

We belong to one or the other. To not align with Christ is, by default, to be aligned with the devil. We must understand that our very life is connected to our proximity to the Lord Jesus. He is the source of life. The closer we are to Him, the more true life we experience.
