Psalm 106:28-33

The story of Phinehas is recorded in Numbers 25. The Israelites, just a few months from entering the promised land after their 40 year journey, were led astray by some Moabite women and even went so far as to worship the gods of Moab causing the anger of the Lord to blaze against the people.
The Lord instructed Moses to seize the ringleaders and execute them before the Lord in broad daylight so that His fierce anger would be quelled.
Just as Moses was ordering Israel’s judges to mete out this judgment, Zimri, a leader from the tribe of Simeon brazenly brought Cozbi, the daughter of a leader of the Midianite clan, into his tent right in front of Moses and the people. Phinehas, who was the grandson of Aaron the priest, followed them both into the tent and thrust a spear through both of them in the act, and his zealous act for the Lord stopped the plague.
In Numbers 25:11 the Lord said to Moses:
““Phinehas son of Eleazar and grandson of Aaron the priest has turned my anger away from the Israelites by being as zealous among them as I was. So I stopped destroying all Israel as I had intended to do in my zealous anger.”

You really don’t want to tick God off and get Him angry. He is long suffering but once His anger is aroused, people die.
Notice, the Lord said Phinehas was commended for being ‘as’ angry and zealous as God was; in other words, Phinehas was as upset as God about this brazen act.
Do the things that upset God, upset us? Do we share His same passion for righteousness and moral purity? The answer to that question is found in what we allow in our lives. One has only to look at the 10 commandments to find out what God is passionate about. And yet we have taken great steps to remove these from the public square. I wonder why that is? People don’t seem to want reminders of their sin yet it is these very reminders that will hopefully lead the errant to repentance reminding them of THE Holy God who avenges these sins.
We would do well to remember the words of the psalmist in Psalm 119:9-11:
“How can a young person stay pure? By obeying your word. I have tried hard to find you— don’t let me wander from your commands. I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.”

May we hide God’s word in our hearts that we might not sin against Him.
