Psalm 119:17-24

Much of God’s truth comes by revelation. We can read the Bible, but it is the Holy Spirit Who brings the words alive to us.

I am reminded of when I first accepted the Lord and started to read the Bible. I started in Genesis, figuring I might as well begin in the beginning. But quite honestly, I didn’t really understand what I was reading. A friend of mine mentioned that it was always a good idea to pray before I read and ask the Holy Spirit to reveal His truth. What a difference that made! Truly, as the psalmist prayed, “Open my eyes to see wonderful things in Your instructions.”

We have an Advocate in the Holy Spirit who guides us into all truth (John 16:13).

Consider what the Apostle Paul says in 1 Corinthians 2:10-14:

“But it was to us that God revealed these things by his Spirit. For his Spirit searches out everything and shows us God’s deep secrets. No one can know a person’s thoughts except that person’s own spirit, and no one can know God’s thoughts except God’s own Spirit. And we have received God’s Spirit (not the world’s spirit), so we can know the wonderful things God has freely given us. When we tell you these things, we do not use words that come from human wisdom. Instead, we speak words given to us by the Spirit, using the Spirit’s words to explain spiritual truths. But people who aren’t spiritual can’t receive these truths from God’s Spirit. It all sounds foolish to them and they can’t understand it, for only those who are spiritual can understand what the Spirit means.”

This explains why there are those who insult and mock us. They are void of the Spirit of God, Who only comes by invitation. In fact, the only reason the Holy Spirit comes to dwell in us is because Jesus paid the price for our sin, and His righteousness is now conferred upon those who receive Him. Without Jesus’ righteousness, the Holy Spirit will not come. Consider Jesus words in John 16:7-13:

“But in fact, it is best for you that I go away, because if I don’t, the Advocate won’t come. If I do go away, then I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will convict the world of its sin, and of God’s righteousness, and of the coming judgment. The world’s sin is that it refuses to believe in me. Righteousness is available because I go to the Father, and you will see me no more. Judgment will come because the ruler of this world has already been judged. “There is so much more I want to tell you, but you can’t bear it now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future.”

We have no greater Helper than the Holy Spirit, our Advocate. Jesus did not leave us defenseless; rather, He  equipped us with His Spirit so that we may do the good things He  planned for us all along. The blessings of God on found on His paths as we obediently follow His commands—a truth, no doubt, the psalmist had discovered. There is no better way to live!
