Psalm 136:4-9

One has only to look at the night sky and see God’s handiwork. Creation is a matter far too great for any of us to fully comprehend. At best, we can learn some of its intricacies, yet there is no way not to marvel at it.
What keeps us perfectly distanced from the sun? A degree off here or there is all it would take for the world as we know it to be thrown into turmoil. Who keeps us in place? Have you ever really wondered what prevents us from floating out into space?
As God so pointedly asked Job:
““Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell me, if you know so much. Who determined its dimensions and stretched out the surveying line? What supports its foundations, and who laid its cornerstone as the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy? “Who kept the sea inside its boundaries as it burst from the womb, and as I clothed it with clouds and wrapped it in thick darkness? For I locked it behind barred gates, limiting its shores. I said, ‘This far and no farther will you come. Here your proud waves must stop!’”

When we take time to consider the intricacies of creation, it can be overwhelming. As David once exclaimed:
“Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too great for me to understand!”

Yet, woven between each point, the psalmist reminds us that God’s faithful love endures forever. I believe he states this intentionally, because it can be overwhelming and even terrifying when one considers the greatness of God. Consider Isaiah’s testimony when he saw the Lord in His glory:
“It was in the year King Uzziah died that I saw the Lord. He was sitting on a lofty throne, and the train of his robe filled the Temple. Attending him were mighty seraphim, each having six wings. With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they flew. They were calling out to each other, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of Heaven’s Armies! The whole earth is filled with his glory!” Their voices shook the Temple to its foundations, and the entire building was filled with smoke. Then I said, “It’s all over! I am doomed, for I am a sinful man. I have filthy lips, and I live among a people with filthy lips. Yet I have seen the King, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.””
Isaiah 6:1-5 NLT

And in the words of David:
“When I look at the night sky and see the work of your fingers— the moon and the stars you set in place— what are mere mortals that you should think about them, human beings that you should care for them?”
Psalms 8:3-4 NLT

What is man, that He is mindful of us? Thank God that we are the objects of His affection! In light of the vastness of creation and the immeasurable greatness of God, He loves us. Is that not something to thank God for each and every day?
