Psalm 131:1-3

How many times do we lose ourselves over things that are too great for us to understand? How easily we get rattled by things! The psalmist seems settled that he is no longer going to waste his time and energy on things he has no control over. Instead, he quiets and calms himself. Some of us still have to learn how to do that in stressful, unpredictable moments. The sky is not falling—and even if it were, we know the One who holds the sky, and us, in the palm of His hand.

Maybe calmness comes with age. Experience has taught us that the sun will come up tomorrow, even though the night has been long and hard. We cannot lose hope in the One who is well able to take care of the things that concern us. We just have to put them in God’s hands—and leave them there.

Jesus was very clear when He said:

““That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life—whether you have enough food and drink, or enough clothes to wear. Isn’t life more than food, and your body more than clothing? Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren’t you far more valuable to him than they are? Can all your worries add a single moment to your life?”

That seems to be the message the psalmist is trying to get across.

We have another example found in Luke where Jesus gently rebukes Martha for being so bothered—by things that really didn’t matter in the grand scheme of things.

“But the Lord said to her, “My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.””
‭‭Luke‬ ‭10‬:‭41‬-‭42‬ ‭NLT‬‬

What had Mary discovered? Where was she? At the feet of Jesus. Where should we be? At the feet of Jesus! The more we get to know God, the more we learn that He has everything covered. Nothing escapes His notice, and the Bible says that all things work together for good for those who love God and are called according to His purpose. The key is to make sure you are walking in the will of God. Ultimate protection is found under the wings of the Almighty, as so beautifully stated in Psalm 91.

I am reminded of a picture I once saw of a mother grouse with her wings stretched out to cover her babies in the pouring rain. It was an amazing image, and not unlike what I feel like the Lord does with us. Oh, we have to endure some storms—but as long as we remain under His wings, we won’t get wet or burned, as was the case with Shadrach, Meshach, and Abdnego who were thrown into the fiery furnace. As the book of Daniel records:

“But suddenly, Nebuchadnezzar jumped up in amazement and exclaimed to his advisers, “Didn’t we tie up three men and throw them into the furnace?” “Yes, Your Majesty, we certainly did,” they replied. “Look!” Nebuchadnezzar shouted. “I see four men, unbound, walking around in the fire unharmed! And the fourth looks like a god!””

Our God is well able to keep us and protect us. Instead of keeping our eyes on the storm, let’s keep our eyes of Him—for He is where our help comes from.
