Psalm 119:129-136

To understand the cry of the psalmist heart is to understand this: we were made to be loved by our Creator, and in return, to love Him back. Jesus said that if we love Him, we will keep His commandments. The psalmist has such reverence and love for God that his foremost thought is to please Him—and what better way than by following His Word?

God’s Word gives the light by which we can see. His light illuminates our path and guides our steps so we will not be overcome by evil. I have followed the Lord for some time now, yet I am still struck by the constant reminders that evil exists in the world. Most people live oblivious to the spiritual battle that rages around them. We often look for the motives of the most heinous crimes, as if that somehow explain their actions, but at the core of all bad behavior is the influence of evil. It is the undercurrent of the world, and to not actively oppose it is to be swept away by it.

We used to live on the beach, and often on the weekends, we would spend time swimming in the ocean. My mom would sit on the beach and watch my siblings and me as we played in the waves. Every once in a while, we would hear her call out to us because, unbeknownst to us, the current had swept us down the beach too far for her comfort. I was always amazed how far we could drift without realizing it. Such is the work and influence of evil—it does not announce itself but works underhandedly to trip us up.

Consider what King David wrote in Psalm 11:2:

“The wicked are stringing their bows and fitting their arrows on the bowstrings. They shoot from the shadows at those whose hearts are right.”

Evil shoots from the shadows in such a way that we often don’t see it coming until it is too late. That’s why we must protect ourselves by staying close to the Protector. God’s commands will keep us from evil and guide our steps onto sturdy ground that will not give way. His Word is a protection for our souls, enabling us to navigate this minefield of life safely. I am grateful for what hasn’t happened to me because to God’s protection.

In the words of Psalm 91:2-4:

“This I declare about the Lord: He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; he is my God, and I trust him. For he will rescue you from every trap and protect you from deadly disease. He will cover you with his feathers. He will shelter you with his wings. His faithful promises are your armor and protection.”

Amen!
