Matthew 8:28-34

What amazes me about Jesus’ dealings with the demonic is that they recognize who He is. They knew Him before, and they recognize Him now. They also understand that they have no authority to stand against Him.
What they shout at Him is telling:
“They began screaming at him, ‘Why are you interfering with us, Son of God? Have you come here to torture us before God’s appointed time?’” — Matthew 8:29 (NLT)
What was Jesus interfering with? Their plans—their control over these men.
Secondly, notice that they ask whether He has come to torment them before the “appointed time,” indicating that they know what will eventually happen to them.
Demons know their future and are doing their best to take as many people with them as they can.
I wish people understood the stakes at play in this life. Who we align ourselves with determines our destiny. We are to have nothing to do with darkness or the deeds of darkness, but unfortunately, we sometimes allow the enemy access into our lives through the choices we make, opening the door to oppression and even possession.
Yet even here, we see Jesus operating in mercy toward these men. He binds the strongmen (the demons) possessing them, and He even honors the demons’ request to enter the pigs—which was short-lived, as the pigs immediately drowned.
This account serves as a reminder that demons are real. They seek to inhabit anything living, gaining access or footing in this world to carry out their destructive work. We must give them no place in our lives, in the lives of our loved ones, or in the world around us. We are called to destroy the works of darkness, just as Jesus did.
Consider the instructions found in Ephesians 5:11–14:
“Take no part in the worthless deeds of evil and darkness; instead, expose them. It is shameful even to talk about the things that ungodly people do in secret. But their evil intentions will be exposed when the light shines on them, for the light makes everything visible. This is why it is said, ‘Awake, O sleeper, rise up from the dead, and Christ will give you light.’”
And consider this promise from Jesus:
“Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, ‘I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.’” — John 8:12 (NLT)
May we all walk in the Light.
