Matthew 5:13-16

We are called to make a difference in the world we live in and have been given a mandate to go and make disciples of all nations. Here, Jesus uses two powerful analogies: we are to be like salt and light.
Salt has interesting characteristics in that it acts as both a flavor enhancer and a preservative. What kind of “flavor” do we carry with us? Do our interactions with others leave a good taste or a bad taste in their mouths?
Secondly, are we actively preserving those around us by sharing the good news of the Gospel? The Gospel message holds promise not only for our eternal home but also for our present reality. I cannot tell you how many times I have been “preserved” by making good choices in life. Had it not been for the Holy Spirit speaking to me—often through the Word of God at key moments—I may have made some terrible decisions.
Are we shining our light or hiding it? We are called to let His light shine through us, much like a lighthouse that shines and provides guidance for maritime vessels navigating the waters at night.
There are times when the world can be a very dark place, and sometimes God will use us to provide light for those walking in darkness. People will respond to that light in different ways—some will be grateful for someone shining the way out, much like you would be if you were in a dark cave and someone had a flashlight; others may be hiding in the dark by choice and do not welcome the light because it exposes them. Whatever the reasons that keep people in darkness, our light is meant to shine for all—both those who are searching and those who are hiding.
In conclusion, as followers of Christ, we are called to live intentionally, carrying the preserving influence of salt and the guiding beacon of light into a world that desperately needs both.
