Matthew 5:1-6

This begins one of Jesus’ most well-known teachings—the Beatitudes. My husband and I were able to travel to Israel in 2018 and see the very site where this took place. It is a beautiful spot with excellent acoustics, allowing His words to carry quite a distance down the hill.

God blesses the poor who recognize their need for God. Everyone needs God, but not all realize it. Pride often keeps some from seeing their absolute lostness before Him. Yet God grants the kingdom to those who are able to admit their frailty before Him.

God blesses those who mourn, for they will be comforted—not just here, but in Heaven as well, where every tear will be wiped from their eyes. Earth is the only place we experience death, yet for those who believe in Jesus, eternal life awaits. This is something we can all take comfort in.

God blesses the humble, for they will inherit the whole earth. Humility is key when it comes to the things of God. I love this because it holds promise for both the here and now. The earth is reserved for the humble, no matter how many usurpers try to take possession of it. There is none more humble than Jesus, and He owns it all. He is the example we are to follow.

Lastly for today, God blesses those who hunger and thirst for justice, for they will be satisfied. This is one of my favorite promises because there are so many injustices in the world. The devil makes sure of it, and it breaks my heart to see people who are victims of his handiwork—and worse, the people through whom these atrocities come. Yet God promises that we will see justice—the righting of wrongs. However, He alone can rightly judge these matters, as those who abuse are often victims of abuse themselves, and only God can sort all of that out. He is the one who said, “Vengeance is Mine; I will repay.”

It is best to leave things in God’s hands. He will sort them out—as long as we place them in His hands and leave them there.
