Psalm 150:1-6

As we close out the Psalms, the instructions we are given are very clear: we are to praise God wherever we are and with whatever we have. We are to praise Him for His mighty acts, which are unmatched, and for His greatness, which is unequaled. There is no one like our God and no one more deserving of our praise.

And notice—we are not to be quiet about it. We are to praise Him with the blast of the horns, the clash and clanging of cymbals, and, more importantly, with our voices as we sing. When we come to church, in our time of worship, we are not to be spectators but participants. In fact, if we have breath in our lungs, it is to be used to praise Him.

We use our breath for a lot of things, don’t we? The tongue is an amazing part of the body, yet, as James warns:

“People can tame all kinds of animals, birds, reptiles, and fish, but no one can tame the tongue. It is restless and evil, full of deadly poison. Sometimes it praises our Lord and Father, and sometimes it curses those who have been made in the image of God. And so blessing and cursing come pouring out of the same mouth. Surely, my brothers and sisters, this is not right!”
‭‭James‬ ‭3‬:‭7‬-‭10‬ ‭NLT‬‬

What do we use the breath in our lungs for? Do we beautify the world by the words we speak, or do we destroy it? When David said, “Let all that I am praise the Lord,” he meant it. We need to bring every part of our body into subjection to the King, including our tongue. As a reminder, Jesus also warns us that we will have to give an account for every idle word we speak.

Words have power. God spoke, and everything came into being. What are we creating with our words? Scripture says that life and death are in the power of the tongue, so why not use our tongues to bring life rather than death into situations?

What better way to bring life into a situation than to praise God? When we praise Him, the Scriptures say that He inhabits our praises (Psalm 22:3). If we need God on the scene, there is no better way to enlist His help than by praising Him. He is attracted to our praise.

Praising God is the right and proper thing to do no matter what. He is the answer to every problem, the hope of every situation, and the anchor of our souls—faithful, unchanging, and worthy of all praise.
