Psalm 141:8-10

A refuge is a place of safety from danger. David experienced God’s deliverance multiple times throughout his life. He was delivered from the lion and the bear, and most notably from the giant Goliath, as well as from king Saul, who tried to kill him several times. He had learned what the psalmist declared in Psalm 46:1:
“God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble.”

God was certainly Daniel’s refuge when he was thrown into the lions’ den. He was the refuge of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego when they were cast into the fiery furnace. Even in rebellion, God kept Jonah safe in the belly of a great fish. Jehoshaphat cried out to the Lord in the midst of a battle, and God saved him.
And how many times do we see people being delivered from the schemes of men? An angel delivered Peter from execution while he was chained between two prison guards. Though not recorded in Scripture, tradition says that God delivered John when the Roman Emperor Domitian attempted to kill him by throwing him into a vat of boiling oil. John emerged unharmed, and the emperor exiled him to the island of Patmos, where he wrote the Book of Revelation.
When Elisha’s whereabouts were revealed to the king of Aram, he sent a great army and surrounded the city where Elisha was staying. In 2 Kings 2:15, we read:
“When the servant of the man of God got up early the next morning and went outside, there were troops, horses, and chariots everywhere. “Oh, sir, what will we do now?” the young man cried to Elisha. “Don’t be afraid!” Elisha told him. “For there are more on our side than on theirs!” Then Elisha prayed, “O Lord, open his eyes and let him see!” The Lord opened the young man’s eyes, and when he looked up, he saw that the hillside around Elisha was filled with horses and chariots of fire. As the Aramean army advanced toward him, Elisha prayed, “O Lord, please make them blind.” So the Lord struck them with blindness as Elisha had asked. Then Elisha went out and told them, “You have come the wrong way! This isn’t the right city! Follow me, and I will take you to the man you are looking for.” And he led them to the city of Samaria. As soon as they had entered Samaria, Elisha prayed, “O Lord, now open their eyes and let them see.” So the Lord opened their eyes, and they discovered that they were in the middle of Samaria.”

We can also see from this story that God has a sense of humor. This event made such an impression on the King of Aram, that the Scripture notes the Aramean raiders stayed away from the land of Israel afterward.
And who can forget how God miraculously delivered Moses and the Israelites at the Red Sea?
Yet the greatest deliverance of all is the one Jesus provided for us from sin, death, the grave, and the clutches of the devil. Because of Jesus, all of those who have received Him as Lord and Savior will be delivered from death and will live eternally with Him.
We serve a mighty God who can deliver us from any danger. We just need to learn to call out to Him as our first resort, not our last.
