Psalm 141:1-4

One of the keys of life is knowing where to run when you’ve gotten in over your head. King David was very good at continually calling out to the Lord. He clearly understood the principle Jesus highlighted in the parable of the unjust judge in Luke 18:1-8:
“One day Jesus told his disciples a story to show that they should always pray and never give up. “There was a judge in a certain city,” he said, “who neither feared God nor cared about people. A widow of that city came to him repeatedly, saying, ‘Give me justice in this dispute with my enemy.’ The judge ignored her for a while, but finally he said to himself, ‘I don’t fear God or care about people, but this woman is driving me crazy. I’m going to see that she gets justice, because she is wearing me out with her constant requests!’” Then the Lord said, “Learn a lesson from this unjust judge. Even he rendered a just decision in the end. So don’t you think God will surely give justice to his chosen people who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? I tell you, he will grant justice to them quickly! But when the Son of Man returns, how many will he find on the earth who have faith?””

God will not ignore our cries for help, yet as Jesus emphasized throughout Scripture—and at the end of this parable—the real problem is often our lack of faith.
James also reminds us of this truth:
“If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking. But when you ask him, be sure that your faith is in God alone. Do not waver, for a person with divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind. Such people should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Their loyalty is divided between God and the world, and they are unstable in everything they do.”
James 1:5-8 NLT

If we are going to ask God for help, we need to combine our request with faith—believing that He will answer.
David also includes a prayer asking God to set a guard over his mouth. Who couldn’t use a little of that? How many times have we made a situation worse simply by opening our mouths? (No need to raise your hand—I already know!)
Walking a sanctified life before the Lord means learning to say no to certain things. We must refuse some of the “delicacies” the world offers at the cost of our soul. Not everyone exercises self-control, which is why Scripture calls it a fruit of the Holy Spirit. We need the Holy Spirit actively at work in our lives in order to display His fruit, and that only comes through staying connected to Him.
As a gardener, I’ve learned that when a plant isn’t bearing fruit, something in its environment is off—maybe the soil, the sunlight, the water, or even pests. Is it any different with our Christian walk? If we aren’t bearing fruit, we need to be willing examine the reasons why. Is it the company we keep, the habits we entertain, or a lack of connection with God?
As the Apostle Paul instructs us:
“Examine yourselves to see if your faith is genuine. Test yourselves. Surely you know that Jesus Christ is among you; if not, you have failed the test of genuine faith.”
