Psalm 137:1-9

Just as God brought the Israelites into their own land,He also allowed the Babylonians to remove them from it as punishment for their sinidolatry. Moses forewarned the Israelites of this in Deuteronomy:
“If you do not serve the Lord your God with joy and enthusiasm for the abundant benefits you have received, you will serve your enemies whom the Lord will send against you. You will be left hungry, thirsty, naked, and lacking in everything. The Lord will put an iron yoke on your neck, oppressing you harshly until he has destroyed you. “The Lord will bring a distant nation against you from the end of the earth, and it will swoop down on you like a vulture. It is a nation whose language you do not understand, a fierce and heartless nation that shows no respect for the old and no pity for the young.”

Jeremiah the prophet repeatedly warned the Israelites of impending disaster if they continued in their adulterous ways. He was known as the weeping prophet because the people refused to listen to him.
One such prophesy is found in Jeremiah 29, where the Lord tells the people that their Babylonian captivity would last seventy years:
“This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel, says to all the captives he has exiled to Babylon from Jerusalem: “Build homes, and plan to stay. Plant gardens, and eat the food they produce. Marry and have children. Then find spouses for them so that you may have many grandchildren. Multiply! Do not dwindle away! And work for the peace and prosperity of the city where I sent you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, for its welfare will determine your welfare.” This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel, says: “Do not let your prophets and fortune-tellers who are with you in the land of Babylon trick you. Do not listen to their dreams, because they are telling you lies in my name. I have not sent them,” says the Lord. This is what the Lord says: “You will be in Babylon for seventy years. But then I will come and do for you all the good things I have promised, and I will bring you home again.”

Yet they could not even follow these instructions, and King Zedekiah rebelled against Babylonian rule, resulting in the complete destruction of the temple Solomon had built.
Sometimes you have to learn to take your medicine. Just as God’s promises are true, so are His warnings. He always reveals what will happen if we disobey, yet some foolishly continue in their waywardness, putting Him to the test—only to discover that God means what He says and says what He means.
In America, we stand at similar crossroads. Though dedicated to God in our inception, we have wandered far from the Lord. We have allowed things into our society that should be never be found among God‘s people, and as a result, the enemy has infiltrated our land. It seems the church is slowly awakening, but it is a steep climb to return to where we once were. Not everyone desires to follow the Lord, and my prayer is that, as a nation, we will not have to learn the hard that we will either serve God or we will serve our enemies, just as Israel discovered.
