Acts 8:32-40

Picking up from yesterday, Philip was instructed by an angel to head south on a desert road leading from Jerusalem toward Gaza. He encountered an Ethiopian eunuch who happened to be reading aloud from the book of Isaiah. The Holy Spirit told Philip to go near the chariot, so Philip asked the eunuch if he understood what he was reading, and the eunuch invited him to come up into the chariot with him.
It is quite remarkable that he happened to be reading this particular portion of Scripture in light of what had recently taken place in Jerusalem. He was reading from Isaiah 53, one of the most prophetic passages concerning the Messiah, pointing directly to Jesus’ suffering, crucifixion, and resurrection.
God perfectly set the stage for Philip to explain to the eunuch how Jesus fulfilled these prophetic Scriptures. As they traveled along, the chariot came to some water, and the man asked Philip to baptize him. Salvation came to that chariot that day, and this very important Ethiopian official was about to carry this all-important message back to his country.
As if the timing of the Scripture passage were not enough, immediately after Philip baptized the eunuch, he was suddenly snatched away by the Spirit of God and transported over 30 miles away to the town of Azotus—an original “beam me up, Scotty” moment for you Star Trek fans. Just a reminder: this was Philip, an everyday believer, not one of the Apostles, who was obediently following the will of the Lord, and we see miraculous things happening through his life.
Consider the testimony this eunuch must have shared upon his return. Church tradition recognizes him as Simeon, also known as Bachos or Djan Darada, and credits him as a foundational figure in spreading the Gospel in Ethiopia.
We never fully know in the moment why God prompts us to do certain things, and we may not understand this side of heaven the full ramifications of our obedience—much like these men didn’t either. Yet history has shown us how small acts of obedience can have a tremendous impact for generations to come.
