Matthew 10:10-13

We need to show genuine interest in learning about God before He entrusts us with deeper truths. Jesus even warned His disciples not to cast their pearls before swine. In other words, we are not to waste valuable wisdom, insight, or resources on those who have no interest in receiving them.
On the other hand, if we truly desire to learn more, we must apply ourselves. Wisdom is not simply handed to us. We must demonstrate appreciation for it if we hope to be entrusted with it.
As parents, we understand this principle well. We must determine when our children are ready for certain responsibilities—like driving. We would never hand car keys to a two-year-old. Ironically, that didn’t stop me when I was two. I remember climbing into our family car that was parked on a slight incline near our house. I shut the door and began playing with the steering wheel and gear shift. Somehow, I managed to put the car in neutral. ? The car slowly began to coast down the hill, rolling onto the lawn before finally coming to a stop. I simply climbed out and went on with my day. ?♀️ I can only imagine what my mom thought when she saw the car sitting in the middle of the yard!
Some truths carry responsibilities that are not for the faint of heart. The Lord knows when we are ready to receive certain understanding. The Holy Spirit teaches us line upon line, precept upon precept, building our understanding step by step. Many truths cannot be grasped without first having a solid foundation. Just as you cannot tackle Algebra without understanding basic math, spiritual understanding also grows progressively, beginning with the fear of the Lord.
There are no shortcuts when it comes to learning the things of God. Thankfully, we have a patient teacher in the Holy Spirit, who reveals truth to us in the proper time and measure—a lesson I have learned, at times, the hard way.
As James 4:8 reminds us:
“Come close to God, and God will come close to you.”
If we truly want to know God and understand how He thinks, we must be willing to seek Him with sincerity and humility. That means setting aside distractions, examining our hearts, and allowing Him to shape our desires. The more we pursue Him and apply what He teaches us, the more clearly we begin to see His wisdom unfold in our lives.
