Acts 3:1-8

The book of Acts is appropriately named, for we see the mission of Jesus continuing through the apostles. The Holy Spirit, as promised, is working through them, performing signs and wonders, and this miracle is about to stir up the religious community. For the moment, we will rejoice in this incredible miracle.

What stands out to me in this passage is this statement:

“I don’t have any silver or gold for you. But I will give you what I have. In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, get up and walk!”

Would gold have been helpful? Yes, but it would not have fixed his condition. What Peter offered was far better than gold. This man was begging to compensate for his inability to walk, yet the Lord, through Peter, removed his need to beg by healing him.

Sometimes we set our expectations too low. What areas in our lives might we be settling for “silver and gold” instead of believing God for something deeper and transformational? This man received more than he bargained for; yet it was about to set off a firestorm among the religious leaders. As the saying goes, “No good deed goes unpunished.”

One other thing I would like to point out: notice that Peter said he would give the man what he had. What did he have? Miracle-working power through the Holy Spirit—something every believer in Christ has, whether they realize it or not. We just have to learn to release it by faith.

As we go through the book of Acts, may we come to realize and activate the power that resides within us—the Holy Spirit—by faith. As the Apostle Paul tells us in Romans 8:11:

“The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, he will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you.”

How awesome is that?
