Acts 5:17-23

Sometimes we read through the Scriptures without really reading them, if you know what I mean.

The high priest and the religious leaders were jealous of the Apostles and had them arrested. God was moving mightily through the Apostles, and the religious leaders didn’t like it. Instead of acknowledging that God was in their midst, working through the Apostles, they chose to attack them.

How often do we become jealous of those who are making a difference?

It was the next verse, however, that caught my attention. I had casually read over it before, but then I read it again:

“But an angel of the Lord came at night, opened the gates of the jail, and brought them out. Then they told them, ‘Go to the Temple and give the people this message of life!’”

Time out! This was a supernatural deliverance. An angel set them free from jail! Not only that, but he then told them to go right back to the Temple and continue preaching the message of life—the very place where they had just been arrested. Did they not fear the religious leaders? Possibly. However, I think they feared the angel of the Lord more. The angel certainly had just demonstrated that he was able to deliver them from anything the religious leaders could do to them.

Life is about knowing who to trust and who to serve.

The religious leaders were in for a surprise when they woke up the next morning, but we will talk about that tomorrow—unless you would like to read ahead ?
