Matthew 15:21-28

God is a God of structure and order. He brings order out of chaos, as He did when our world began. He is very detailed, as creation reveals, and He places great importance on the chain of command—something the centurion, who received healing for his servant, clearly understood.

In this case, Jesus’ mission was first to the lost sheep of Israel. The Gospel was to be presented to God’s Old Covenant people before extending to the rest of the world. This is a restriction we also see Jesus give to His disciples when He sent them out. They were instructed to go only to the people of Israel—God’s lost sheep.

So while Jesus died for everyone, His primary mission was first directed toward the people of Israel, who had lost their way. Even Paul acknowledges this order, emphasizing that the message was given first to the Jew and then to the Gentile in Romans 1:16.

So, coming back to the Gentile woman in this account, Jesus was not being rude. Rather, He understood the scope of the ministry given to Him by the Father, something He clearly demonstrated here. Israel was to hear the Gospel first.

Yet, He was moved by this woman’s persistence, her humility, her understanding of her position, and her thoughtful response. She appealed to the King’s compassion and received healing for her daughter based solely on her faith. She had no apparent standing, yet He granted her a “crumb” because of her belief in His mercy. This was a test for her—and she passed.

Are we this persistent? When all odds are against us, do we press through until we receive our answer? Sometimes, I believe God allows these moments to reveal what we are made of, showing us through His grace that we are able to overcome the obstacles we face in life.
