Acts 8:4-8

Some have maintained that signs and wonders were only performed by the apostles. Yet here we have Philip—a non-apostle, simply one of the believers who was scattered—sharing the Good News about Jesus in Samaria, and signs and wonders were happening through him. Signs and wonders follow the preaching of the Word. Is this not what Jesus said before He was taken up to heaven:
“These miraculous signs will accompany those who believe: They will cast out demons in my name, and they will speak in new languages. They will be able to handle snakes with safety, and if they drink anything poisonous, it won’t hurt them. They will be able to place their hands on the sick, and they will be healed.” Mark 16:17-18 NLT
Philip took Jesus at His Word and did just that. As Mark 16:20 states:
“And the disciples went everywhere and preached, and the Lord worked through them, confirming what they said by many miraculous signs.”
Unfortunately, much of the church doesn’t believe this. Oh, they believe in miracles, but they don’t believe miracles will happen through them. Honestly, for the number of “believers” we have in this world, we should have changed this world a hundred times over by now. Yet many of us have still not learned how to truly live in and by faith.
The people of Samaria rejoiced because, “Many evil spirits were cast out, screaming as they left their victims. And many who had been paralyzed or lame were healed.”
Miracles get attention and give validity to the message. The question is: are we preaching the right message, or are we preaching at all?
We are each called to be witnesses of the Lord Jesus everywhere we go. But what good is a message if it is not backed by the power of God in demonstration? There are many messages out there, but to preach the full Gospel, signs and wonders must follow.
This is a challenge to all of us. Will we take Jesus at His Word and do what He has commanded us to do? We often forget that Jesus has given us authority over the devil, as He states in Luke 10:19:
“Look, I have given you authority over all the power of the enemy, and you can walk among snakes and scorpions and crush them. Nothing will injure you.”
It is time for us as believers to walk in the authority given to us and cast the devil out of our cities and towns in Jesus’ name.
