John 6:29-35

This first Scripture is one that has caused me to scratch my head more than once. In one simple sentence, Jesus distinguishes between works-based thinking and grace-based truth: “This is the only work God wants from you: believe in the One He has sent.”

I have to admit, this passage led me into a rather extensive study last night—one that I ended up sharing during our ladies’ meeting this morning. The crowd in the text was focused on food, yet Jesus pointed out that it was really Him they were seeking, whether they realized it or not. They were driven by physical needs, but Jesus redirected their attention to their deeper spiritual need. He made it clear that if they would address the spiritual, everything else would follow. Whoever comes to Him will never hunger again, and whoever believes in Him will never thirst again.

How is that possible? It brings us back to His original statement: “This is the only work God wants from you: believe in the One He has sent.”

Belief—true, abiding faith—is what unlocks heaven’s storehouse. Our trust, hope, faith, and complete dependence on Jesus are what He asks of us. His promises are “yes and amen,” and as we place our faith in those promises, we begin to experience a deep and unshakable peace. It is a peace that carries us through every storm, assuring us that all will be well—not because of our strength, but because of who He is: good, powerful, benevolent, trustworthy, and faithful to His Word.

He will come through for us—we have only to believe.
