Romans 1:18-23
It is never a good career move to get God angry. Paul says that God gets angry with those who suppress the truth by their wickedness. Are there people who do this? Yes! What makes error so dangerous is that it often contains some measure of truth—just enough to make you think it is okay. We have but to look back at the Garden of Eden to see how cleverly the serpent deceived Eve, twisting the truth to his advantage.
We see this play out every day in the news—not that I watch it much anymore. Have you ever thought about why television is called that? They “tell a vision,” hoping the masses will follow along—and too often, we do.
What is even more sobering here is that Paul says they know the truth about God. In other words, the evidence of His existence is plainly before them, yet they deliberately reject what He has revealed and work against Him in this world. Such a bad career move! They will never win that fight, but we have to be careful that we do not become casualties of the war.
Instead of worshipping God for who He is, they deliberately exchange the truth about Him for a lie, creating their own ideas of who—or what—should be worshipped. And behind every deception is the same ancient strategy of the enemy: distort the truth, redirect worship, and turn people's hearts away from God.
The easiest way to fall for deception is to not know the truth. If you can keep the truth from people, they will more easily fall for the lie. The truth, however, always dismantles deception.
Unfortunately, those who continue down these adversarial paths can end up exactly as Paul describes them—with minds that become “dark and confused.” When truth is continually rejected, discernment becomes distorted. What once seemed obviously wrong can eventually appear right, and what is right can appear wrong. Scripture gives us many examples of the devastating consequences that follow when people reject God's truth and yield themselves to darkness.
Instead of worshipping the ever-living God—the Creator of all—they choose to worship creation in its various forms. What an insult to our Maker. The creation was never intended to take the place of the Creator.
Perhaps that is the warning for all of us in this passage: never allow anything God created to occupy the place in our hearts that belongs to God alone.
