Acts 20:28-31

Paul had such a love for God and His people. His words here are reminiscent of Jesus' prayer in John 17. They reveal a heart of concern that every parent understands as they watch their children leave home and embark on life out in the world. As parents, we have some measure of control over the circumstances that may threaten our children, but once they are on their own, we must surrender them into God's providential care. P.S. He is big enough and more than able to keep them safe. ?

Paul knows this is the last time he will see these believers, so he is imparting what he considers most important. He has made tremendous headway for the Gospel in spite of the opposition he has faced from town to town, and now he is instructing them to guard what they have been given in the Lord. They must watch over both themselves and the flock, lest they fall prey to false teachers who would exploit the spiritually immature for their own advantage.

These are words we must take to heart as well. God gives us teachers to help guide us along the way, none greater than the Holy Spirit Himself, but we must also examine ourselves from time to time to make sure we remain "in the faith." It is very easy to become distracted by the affairs of life, and if we are not careful, we can slowly drift back into the ways of the world. We must never forget that the undercurrent of this world is anti-God. Remaining faithful requires intentionality. We must fight for our relationship with God by staying in His Word, walking daily with Him, and yielding to the leading of the Holy Spirit. As we do, our lives will not only please God but also bear witness to His transforming power and bring glory to His name.
