Acts 16:23-28

It is so crazy to think that doing a good deed for someone could land you in jail. Like I said, when you affect someone’s pocketbook, things can get ugly—as they did here. Paul delivered a girl from a spirit of divination, and her masters did not take kindly to it.

Paul and Silas were beaten and then thrown into the inner dungeon with their feet clamped in stocks like common criminals. How threatened some people are by the truth. Truly, it is the god of this age who is most threatened, and he tries to make life difficult for those who follow the Way. Why? Because the Gospel impacts the kingdom he has established on the earth. Always remember that the victory has already been won, but we must walk it out. The only way we lose is if we quit.

Paul and Silas did not quit. In fact, here we find them praying and singing hymns to God, and it appears they had an audience as well, for the other prisoners were listening. What a witness!

Their posture before God did not go unnoticed, and God moved on their behalf in the form of an earthquake. Notice that God did not just set Paul and Silas free. Every prison door flew open, and every prisoner's chains fell off. The message here is clear—salvation, freedom, and deliverance are available for all!

The jailer, being the one responsible for keeping the prison secure, thought everyone had escaped and was about to take his own life rather than face the consequences. But God cared about him as well, as we will see tomorrow.

The best thing we can do in the midst of a storm is praise God. Praise and worship get God's attention and can be viewed as one of the clearest displays of faith in any given situation. They demonstrate that our trust is in God and is not swayed by our circumstances. God's promise to never leave us or forsake us is true, and there are times when our deliverance is possible only through Him.

So the next time you face what seems impossible, consider this promise found in Psalm 121:

“I look up to the mountains— does my help come from there? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth! He will not let you stumble; the one who watches over you will not slumber. Indeed, he who watches over Israel never slumbers or sleeps. The Lord himself watches over you! The Lord stands beside you as your protective shade. The sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon at night. The Lord keeps you from all harm and watches over your life. The Lord keeps watch over you as you come and go, both now and forever.”

Amen. ?
