Psalm 136:17-22

No matter how powerful or how mighty, there is none who can stand against the Lord. God has His purposes for the nations, and those in active defiance are on a short leash. God’s purposes for Israel still stand, for He is true to His Word. Other nations were removed by God, and He gave their land to the Israelites as promised.

As we look through the historical account of Israel’s migration, only those who stood in their way suffered a heavy blow. God owns everything, so who are we to say whom He gives what to? Ignoring the historical account when evaluating present skirmishes is foolish, and to discount the significance of history is to participate in one’s own destruction.

Yet consider this new promise the Apostle Paul speaks of in Ephesians:

“For Christ himself has brought peace to us. He united Jews and Gentiles into one people when, in his own body on the cross, he broke down the wall of hostility that separated us. He did this by ending the system of law with its commandments and regulations. He made peace between Jews and Gentiles by creating in himself one new people from the two groups. Together as one body, Christ reconciled both groups to God by means of his death on the cross, and our hostility toward each other was put to death. He brought this Good News of peace to you Gentiles who were far away from him, and peace to the Jews who were near. Now all of us can come to the Father through the same Holy Spirit because of what Christ has done for us. So now you Gentiles are no longer strangers and foreigners. You are citizens along with all of God’s holy people. You are members of God’s family. Together, we are his house, built on the foundation of the apostles and the prophets. And the cornerstone is Christ Jesus himself. We are carefully joined together in him, becoming a holy temple for the Lord. Through him you Gentiles are also being made part of this dwelling where God lives by his Spirit.”

Paul also gives this warning:

“But some of these branches from Abraham’s tree—some of the people of Israel—have been broken off. And you Gentiles, who were branches from a wild olive tree, have been grafted in. So now you also receive the blessing God has promised Abraham and his children, sharing in the rich nourishment from the root of God’s special olive tree. But you must not brag about being grafted in to replace the branches that were broken off. You are just a branch, not the root. “Well,” you may say, “those branches were broken off to make room for me.” Yes, but remember—those branches were broken off because they didn’t believe in Christ, and you are there because you do believe. So don’t think highly of yourself, but fear what could happen. For if God did not spare the original branches, he won’t spare you either. Notice how God is both kind and severe. He is severe toward those who disobeyed, but kind to you if you continue to trust in his kindness. But if you stop trusting, you also will be cut off. And if the people of Israel turn from their unbelief, they will be grafted in again, for God has the power to graft them back into the tree.”

At the end of the day, it is God’s purposes that will stand. We should be grateful for the opportunities we have each and every day and give Him thanks for the incredible gift offered to us in His Son, Jesus. Jew or Gentile, we all have access through Christ. This is nothing any of us can take credit for. Salvation is a gift extended to all who recognize and acknowledge the Lord Jesus. Thank God for making a way for all mankind to be reconciled to Him. For this,we give thanks!
