Psalm 109:15-25

It never feels good when people lie and speak evil of you. It should not come as a surprise to us for people accused Jesus of things He did not do. As Jesus said to those who were trying to kill Him in John 8:44:

“For you are the children of your father the devil, and you love to do the evil things he does. He was a murderer from the beginning. He has always hated the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, it is consistent with his character; for he is a liar and the father of lies.”

Whose character traits are displayed in our lives? Are we children of God or children of the devil? Our actions and character traits are indicative of who we take after and who we serve.

In the Parable of the Wheat and Tares, Jesus makes it clear that there are children of God and children of the evil one. The evil one purposely plants evil people among the good, spies if you will or as Jesus said, ‘wolves in sheep’s clothing’. Their purpose is not to get saved but rather to trip us up. As Jude said in Jude 1:12-13:

“When these people eat with you in your fellowship meals commemorating the Lord’s love, they are like dangerous reefs that can shipwreck you. They are like shameless shepherds who care only for themselves. They are like clouds blowing over the land without giving any rain. They are like trees in autumn that are doubly dead, for they bear no fruit and have been pulled up by the roots. They are like wild waves of the sea, churning up the foam of their shameful deeds. They are like wandering stars, doomed forever to blackest darkness.”

Not everyone is your friend. As Jesus said, you will recognize them not by their words, but by their fruit. Be careful of the company you keep. Remember, “bad company corrupts good character.” (1 Corinthians 15:33)
