Psalm 110:1-7

This psalm contains so many powerful truths. In fact Jesus used the first verse to challenge the Pharisees on what they thought they knew about the Messiah.
“Then, surrounded by the Pharisees, Jesus asked them a question: “What do you think about the Messiah? Whose son is he?” They replied, “He is the son of David.” Jesus responded, “Then why does David, speaking under the inspiration of the Spirit, call the Messiah ‘my Lord’? For David said, ‘The Lord said to my Lord, Sit in the place of honor at my right hand until I humble your enemies beneath your feet.’ Since David called the Messiah ‘my Lord,’ how can the Messiah be his son?” No one could answer him. And after that, no one dared to ask him any more questions.”
Matthew 22:41-46 NLT

The Lord (Yahweh) told David’s Lord (Adonai, the Messiah) to sit in the place of honor… Jesus used the Scriptures that the Pharisees prided themselves in knowing to show them that their understanding of them was incorrect and incomplete. That is why they had a hard time accepting that Jesus was the Messiah.
Verse two reveals a powerful truth as well. The Lord (Yahweh) will extend the Messiah’s (Adonai’s) kingdom ‘from’ Jerusalem. That is where Jesus commissioned His rule through His disciples, (all those who call upon Him as Lord, Savior, and King). The message of salvation ushering in the rule of Christ in the heart of every believer through the power of the Holy Spirit, was initiated and sent out ‘from’ Jerusalem on the day of Pentecost.
Consider what Jesus said to the apostles at His ascension:
“So when the apostles were with Jesus, they kept asking him, “Lord, has the time come for you to free Israel and restore our kingdom?” He replied, “The Father alone has the authority to set those dates and times, and they are not for you to know. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” After saying this, he was taken up into a cloud while they were watching, and they could no longer see him.”

And then consider what happened on the Day of Pentecost as recorded in Acts 2:1-4:
“On the day of Pentecost all the believers were meeting together in one place. Suddenly, there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were sitting. Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them. And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability.”

That was the start of the rule of Christ in the hearts of all believers and if you continue reading in Acts 2, you will see the Apostle Peter give a powerful sermon where 3000 people were added to the church that day.
However, the best news of all is found in Isaiah 9:6-7:
“For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. His government and its peace will never end. He will rule with fairness and justice from the throne of his ancestor David for all eternity. The passionate commitment of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies will make this happen!”
Isaiah 9:6-7 NLT

The NASB1995 version of verse 7 states: “There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace.”
Christ’s Kingdom rule is on the increase for the Word of God promises that! And that rule extends out from the heart of every believer through the power of the Holy Spirit.
I just love how the Word of God ties these all together!!! God and His Word never cease to amaze me!
