Acts 20:22-27
Such a powerful statement by Paul. In spite of what lay ahead of him, he declared:
“But my life is worth nothing to me unless I use it to finish the work assigned me by the Lord Jesus—the work of telling others the Good News about the wonderful grace of God.”
What work has the Lord Jesus assigned to us? We are all called to be His witnesses and to make disciples, but what that looks like in our individual lives is determined by the Holy Spirit.
I felt called to ministry when I got saved in college, yet what I thought that meant and what God knew it meant were two different things. I didn't see how golf fit into that picture, yet God gave me a tremendous platform to testify of His goodness and grace when I won the U.S. Open.
What is your platform? Maybe it is in the workforce. Maybe it is in the entertainment industry. Maybe you are a teacher or professor, a doctor or scientist, an artist, or someone serving in the halls of government. Maybe you are an athlete, a firefighter, a police officer, or a soldier who lays his or her life on the line every day protecting our nation at home and abroad. Or perhaps your ministry is in the home, as in the case of Dorcas, whom Peter raised from the dead. Maybe your kitchen is your mission field as a chef. Scripture is clear that whatever we do, whether in word or deed, we are to do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father (Colossians 3:17).
God has gifted each of us uniquely for His glory. Our responsibility is to recognize those gifts, cultivate them, and serve Him wholeheartedly with everything He has entrusted to us. Our lives tell a story because of God. Never think you arrived where you are today on your own. The unseen hand of God's providence has guided you through life, bringing you to salvation and now positioning you to help bring others into His Kingdom.
May we each live with the confidence of a life well run, so that we too could say with Paul, "I declare today that I have been faithful. If anyone suffers eternal death, it is not my fault, for I didn't shrink back from declaring all that God wants you to know."
Even Jesus stated his purpose clearly in John 17:4: “I brought glory to You here on earth by completing the work You gave me to do.”
May that be our testimony—that when our race is finished, we will have faithfully completed the work the Lord Jesus assigned to us, whatever that calling may be.
