Psalm 149:6-9

God orchestrates and controls world events. A study of the Old Testament reveals many instances in which God used other nations as instruments of punishment to execute justice upon those who had turned from Him. Notice that this psalm says, “to execute the judgment written against them.” Who do you think wrote that judgment?

If you read the Old Testament prophets, you will find that God always issued a warning of destruction to the offending nations. Their judgment was “written” before it was executed, in the hope that they would repent. God consistently gives people time to turn back to Him. Should they continue in defiance, He will intervene—often using other nations to bring correction. Babylon was one such instrument in God’s hand, and yet even King Nebuchadnezzar ultimately had to acknowledge God’s sovereignty.

Nations fall through disobedience and are overtaken by whomever God wills. Yet God knows how to protect His own, even through the ravages of war. We hear of horrific atrocities occurring in the world today, but this is nothing new. Wars have existed throughout the ages, and careful examination often reveals a sharp departure from God preceding a nation’s downfall.

Without the Lord’s blessing, nations fall through disobedience. When will we learn to accept God’s sovereignty, align ourselves with His will, and do things His way? His is the winning side.
