Acts 5:26-32

Continuing from yesterday, an angel of the Lord sprung the apostles out of jail. So when the Temple guards came to get them, they were not there. Before they had time to panic, someone came and told them that the apostles were teaching in the Temple once again, just as the angel had instructed them to do the night before.
The Temple guards arrested them again—quietly—and brought them before the High Council. There, the high priest confronted them again about teaching in the name of Jesus. It is amazing how much one Person’s name could be such a threat to them. God gave Jesus the Name that is above every name, and His is the only name by which men can be saved—and the high priest could not stand that.
And not for nothing—contrary to what the high priest said—they were responsible for His death!
I love Peter’s response:
“We must obey God rather than any human authority.”
God always comes first. The only One who should be controlling our actions is God. Those who seek control over us often do not have our best interests at heart, but rather their own.
Peter continues to remind them that though they killed Jesus, God had the final word and raised Him from the dead, placing Him at His right hand as Prince and Savior. They were all witnesses of that fact—something the High Council could not refute.
How resistant the High Council was when confronted with the truth. I wonder if it was because they were so blinded by their hardened hearts, or if they were knowingly rejecting the truth for fear of losing power. Yet the only true power on display was through the hands of the apostles, for they were the ones obedient to the Lord. Obedience unleashes power from the Kingdom for His glory. No wonder the High Council wanted to silence them. Truly Jesus spoke when He said:
““What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you shut the door of the Kingdom of Heaven in people’s faces. You won’t go in yourselves, and you don’t let others enter either.” Matthew 23:13 NLT
They did not like the fact that the apostles had tapped into the true power of God, and the only recourse they had was to try to prevent them from operating in it.
Hence, the battle between good and evil is on full display.
A good Scripture to remember in these kinds of situations:
“Fearing people is a dangerous trap, but trusting the Lord means safety.” Proverbs 29:25 NLT
What would we have done in this situation? Would we have stood up for God or cowered in the fear of man?
