Psalm 144:1-2

In this psalm, David calls God his Rock, his Loving Ally, his Fortress, his Tower of Safety, his Rescuer, his Refuge, and his Shield. That is quite a list!
- A rock gives the impression of being immovable—“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever” (Hebrews 13:8).
- A loving ally is one you can count on to have your best at heart—God is always with us and has good plans for us, plans to give us a future and a hope (Jeremiah 29:11).
- A fortress is a secure compound where no enemy can break in—“Though a thousand fall at your side, though ten thousand are dying around you, these evils will not touch you.”(Psalm 91:7)
- A tower of safety symbolizes that God stands above us, and as we remain in Him, our position is impregnable—“The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous runs into it and is safe” (Psalm 18:10).
- A rescuer is one who saves us from impending disaster—“Our help is from the Lord who made heaven and earth” Psalm 124:8).
- A refuge is a place of provisions and rest from those who pursue us or present any kind of danger—“Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty” (Psalm 91:1).
- A shield is for protection. God is a shield all around us, not just in the front— He even has our backs m, protecting us from danger we don’t see coming. “But You, O Lord, are a shield about me; You are my glory and the One who holds my head high” (Psalm 3:3).
God not only leads us and guides us; He also protects us and watches us from behind. Consider Isaiah 52:12:
“You will not leave in a hurry, running for your lives. For the Lord will go ahead of you; yes, the God of Israel will protect you from behind.”

A beautiful picture of this is found in Exodus 14:
“Then the angel of God, who had been leading the people of Israel, moved to the rear of the camp. The pillar of cloud also moved from the front and stood behind them. The cloud settled between the Egyptian and Israelite camps. As darkness fell, the cloud turned to fire, lighting up the night. But the Egyptians and Israelites did not approach each other all night.”

Don’t you just love God? I am so grateful that He protects us even when we don’t know we need protecting. The enemy likes to shoot from the shadows where we don’t see him coming. Yet God is like a watchman on the wall, allowing us to sleep in safely.
This is beautifully captured in Psalm 121:
“I look up to the mountains— does my help come from there? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth! He will not let you stumble; the one who watches over you will not slumber. Indeed, he who watches over Israel never slumbers or sleeps. The Lord himself watches over you! The Lord stands beside you as your protective shade. The sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon at night. The Lord keeps you from all harm and watches over your life. The Lord keeps watch over you as you come and go, both now and forever.”
