Psalm 134:1-3

A spoken blessing is very important. In Numbers 6, God instructed Aaron and his sons to bless the people of Israel with this special blessing:
“Then the Lord said to Moses, “Tell Aaron and his sons to bless the people of Israel with this special blessing: ‘May the Lord bless you and protect you. May the Lord smile on you and be gracious to you. May the Lord show you his favor and give you his peace.’ Whenever Aaron and his sons bless the people of Israel in my name, I myself will bless them.””

The priests were representatives of God, and many sought their blessings to be spoken over them. To be blessed by the priests was to be blessed by God—through His own words.
Consider how distraught Esau was after Jacob tricked their father Isaac into giving him the blessing of the firstborn:
“But Isaac said, “Your brother was here, and he tricked me. He has taken away your blessing.” Esau exclaimed, “No wonder his name is Jacob, for now he has cheated me twice. First he took my rights as the firstborn, and now he has stolen my blessing. Oh, haven’t you saved even one blessing for me?” Isaac said to Esau, “I have made Jacob your master and have declared that all his brothers will be his servants. I have guaranteed him an abundance of grain and wine—what is left for me to give you, my son?” Esau pleaded, “But do you have only one blessing? Oh my father, bless me, too!” Then Esau broke down and wept.”

Blessings are powerful—they are spoken words. As Proverbs 18:21 reminds us:
“Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit.”

Did you know that as believers, we are considered priests to the Lord?
“And you are living stones that God is building into his spiritual temple. What’s more, you are his holy priests. Through the mediation of Jesus Christ, you offer spiritual sacrifices that please God.”
1 Peter 2:5 NLT

We are also called a chosen people, royal priests, and a holy nation:
“But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.”
1 Peter 2:9 NLT

Our words carry weight, and we should use them to bless, not curse, others. As my mom used to say, “If you don’t have anything nice to say, then don’t say it.” Wise words indeed!
The Apostle Paul also reminds us:
“Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.”
Ephesians 4:29 NLT

Blessings are reciprocal. As we bless others, so shall we be blessed—and who doesn’t want to be blessed?
