Psalm 125:1-5

Prudential Insurance Company has a logo that features the Rock of Gibraltar, and back in the 1980’s, its slogan was: “Get a piece of the Rock.” In more recent years, they’ve advertised using the slogan, “Who’s your Rock?” Good question! Who is our Rock? We are only as secure as our “Rock,” so choose carefully.
The psalmist uses the rocks or mountains around Jerusalem to describe how the Lord surrounds His people. He asks for God’s blessings upon those ”whose hearts are in tune” with Him and then he boldly proclaims that the wicked will not rule the land of the godly. He even implores the Lord to remove “those who turn to crooked ways.”
Jesus also uses a rock analogy:
““Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock. Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock. But anyone who hears my teaching and doesn’t obey it is foolish, like a person who builds a house on sand. When the rains and floods come and the winds beat against that house, it will collapse with a mighty crash.””
Matthew 7:24-27 NLT

Anyone who listens to His teachings and follows them is wise—like building one’s house on a rock—but the person who hears His teachings and doesn’t follow them is like building on sand. Notice that neither one escapes the storm; it’s their preparation that determines whether they make it through.
How prepared are we for the storms of life? For they will surely come. What—or who—are we relying on to help get us through them? In case you weren’t sure, there are things in life bigger than we are, and we’d better have some backing greater than ourselves. If you think you are fine without any help, I have a proverb for you—Proverbs 16:18:
“Pride goes before destruction, and haughtiness before a fall.”
Proverbs 16:18 NLT

The Apostle Paul put it this way:
“If you think you are standing strong, be careful not to fall.”
1 Corinthians 10:12 NLT

Pride is an insidious quality that makes one think more highly of oneself than one should. King Nebuchadnezzar learned that lesson the hard way when he boasted about the great city of Babylon and took all the credit for building it. God drove him from society until he became humble enough to acknowledge that heaven rules. In his words:
““Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and glorify and honor the King of heaven. All his acts are just and true, and he is able to humble the proud.””
Daniel 4:37 NLT

We must be humble enough to admit our privileged yet submissive place in the kingdom of God. There is great freedom in knowing that heaven rules and protects its citizens.
