Psalm 123:1-4

The attentiveness the psalmist speaks of was on full display at a pastor’s conference I attended a few years ago. A lady who was helping register participants for the conference was in a wheelchair and had a beautiful Labrador retriever service dog. I will never forget observing how attentive this dog was to her—it was the very picture of submission and service to her owner. There wasn’t a single move she made that her dog wasn’t aware of. I even remarked to my husband about it and said, “We should be that attentive to the Lord.”
Here in America, we live in the land of the free and the home of the brave. We pride ourselves on our independence, yet that independence can be a dangerous when we live independent of God. We were never meant to live life alone. Our very life comes from God, so how well do you think we will do if we cut ourselves off from the Source of life? If you take a fish out of water, he dies. Water is a source of life for fish just as the air we breathe is a life source for us. Spiritually speaking, God is the Source of life for us all, and we must be mindful that our spirit’s will live forever somewhere—for our spirit’s never die. Where they will dwell is up to us; it all depends on who we are attentive to.
It is our bodies that die, and as I have heard it said, “When you die, the one you belong to is the one who comes to get you.” There are truly only two destinations from here, determined by whom we choose to follow. Who are we attentive to? Some choose to actively follow God, some choose to actively follow Satan, and some deceive themselves into thinking they are simply following their own way—but by default, they fall into the second category.
God states that people perish for a lack of knowledge (Hosea 4:6). Where do you think knowledge comes from? In the words of Wisdom found in Proverbs:
“Joyful are those who listen to me, watching for me daily at my gates, waiting for me outside my home! For whoever finds me finds life and receives favor from the Lord.”

May we be as attentive to the Lord, for in doing so, we find true life!
