Psalm 119:121-128

As we continue in Psalm 119, we notice a repeating pattern: the psalmist proclaims his love and adherence to God’s commands, expresses his hope in God’s deliverance, and cries out for God to act and deal with evildoers. Here, the psalmist declares he loves God’s commands more than even the finest gold and that he hates every false way.
What is a false way? It is a way that appears right, but ultimately does not deliver. It is a way that is deliberately deceptive, leading away from God’s truth and righteousness. It is reasoning that contradicts Scripture. Jesus warned us about false teachers in Matthew:
“For false messiahs and false prophets will rise up and perform great signs and wonders so as to deceive, if possible, even God’s chosen ones.”
Matthew 24:24 NLT

And the Apostle Paul also warned Timothy, saying:
“For a time is coming when people will no longer listen to sound and wholesome teaching. They will follow their own desires and will look for teachers who will tell them whatever their itching ears want to hear. They will reject the truth and chase after myths.”
2 Timothy 4:3-4 NLT

How do we recognize a false teacher? First, we must know the truth in order to recognize error. It has been said that when people are trained to detect to counterfeit money, they study genuine currency to such an extent that they can instantly recognize what is out of place with the counterfeit.
In the same way, the only way we can recognize false ways is by knowing the truth. The truth exposes lies. The truth is a mighty weapon that destroys pretense and false reasoning. Consider Paul’s words to the Corinthians:
“We use God’s mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments. We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ.”
2 Corinthians 10:4-5 NLT

Once again, this highlights our need to read our Bibles. The truth of God is contained in its pages, waiting to be revealed to us by the Holy Spirit. There is no better way to start our day than with a daily dose of God’s truth.
